Where does UX live in your organization? There isn't a standard answer to this question however, the involvement of a UX team in an agile environment is very similar to a product team. UX is involved in all stages of the SDLC; I simplify this into two distinct areas: Large Scale UX, which occurs outside of sprint activities and Small Scale UX, happening during development sprints.
Occuring at the new product or feature stage, UX faciliates design thinking sessions or design sprints to help determine the best possible solution. Conducting deep user research including user interviews and behavioral analysis to identiy goals and create personas.
Once the ideas and sketches have been validated by the user test groups and business stakeholders, UX will work with the Product Manager to create user stories, journey maps, storyboards and refine wireframes and prototypes based on what is possible within the constraints of the project. All to be retested and validated.
When user stories are ready to be added to a sprint, UX works directly with developers and product owners to ensure that any technical constraints can be mitigated in order to deliver in a reasonable point count at the end of the sprint. If something arises to jeopardize that, UX will work with engineering to find a viable solution and re-test the solution quickly to ensure the changes don't compromise the experience.
Once the product or feature have been released in production, UX conducts research and testing to validate the experience with users and discover any potential concerns to address in future sprints.
